Gorgeous 1880s mantle, designed to be worn over a bustled skirt. I attempted to pad the dress form to better display how this lovely piece would look when worn as such, so please excuse any wonky-ness!
I believe the fabric is a wool blend. It is not at all scratchy, though. There is no lining, but there is no evidence that this piece ever had one. There is some beautiful hand stitching on the inside.
This piece is interesting in that there is an entire row of buttonholes but no real buttons. Either the real buttons were replaced with faux buttons or there were never any real buttons to begin with. But if that's the case, why would they go to the trouble of making buttonholes? Hm.
There are two long ribbon ties at the neck with little knotted cord balls on the ends.
Lovely black silk and lace trims the entire piece.

One size fits most but obviously made for a larger frame. There are no closures, so I took a shoulder measurement and length.
Approx 15.5" between shoulder seams
35" long in the back
33" long in the front
+++ Condition +++
Good overall condition with some damage and wear to the silk ribbons and the silk trim around the collar. A few moth holes scattered throughout.
Though the silk around the collar is fragile, the rest of the piece is quite strong. Strong enough to wear with extra care. Would also be a wonderful display or study piece.
