Scarce and beautiful early 19th century corded corset circa 1830s.
Cotton and hand sewn. No boning but there is a channel for a busk down the center front (busk not included). Beautiful, intricate cording for structure and stability as well as a pleasing aesthetic.
Center back lacing with some hand sewn eyelets, some metal eyelets, and two bone eyelets. The metal/bone eyelets are possibly later additions, though I have read that metal eyelets on corsets appeared as early as the late 1820s, so it is also possible some of the original metal or bone eyelets fell out and were repaired by hand.
The original laces have long gone but I have added some cotton cord for the back lacing and the shoulder straps.
A fabulous example of an early corset!
Measured with no gap between the laces.
32" bust
22.5" waist
35" hip
15.5" length
Approx 1.25" busk opening; the channel is slightly larger, about 1.5" wide
Lovely condition overall for her age with some minor flaws to note:
Although this piece has held up extremely well, I wouldn't recommend it for wearing due to age and scarcity.
This item is not new, and as such, it has wear commensurate with age. As with all older vintage and antique items, please handle with care.
